Newspaper Elvis Presley Insert Poster – On Stage in Chicago in his Gold Lamé Suit!
In 1967, as print news competed fiercely with television, newspapers were inspired to test various gimmicks to retain readership. One such attempt came in the form of celebrity insert posters.
Chicago’s American
produced a series of high-quality posters whose backs were blank except for two notations and a number on each, that were printed on newspaper stock, so they could be folded and show no evidence of bleed through from the ink. Celebrities of the day like James Dean, Nancy Sinatra, James Cagney, James Stewart, The Beatles and of course Elvis Presley were all featured. As a result of the fragile nature of newspaper and the fact that this poster insert was intended for use, few remain, making this example a rare survivor.
The offered poster features Elvis in 1957 in his gold lamé suit on the front with a stamp on the reverse that reads in part, “Chicago’s American has used a minimum of printing on this page so that we can give you a giant PICTURE POSTER of Elvis Presley on the reverse side for your collection.” It also mentions Elvis’ then-current films: “(See Elvis Presley with Nancy Sinatra in ‘Speedway,’ an MGM release, and his new United Artist release, ‘Clambake,’ first-run opening Dec. 8 at neighborhood and drive-in theaters.)” Instructions for how to remove the center crease with a hot iron follow.
This large picture poster insert measures 29 by 23 1/2 inches and presents with toning and minor edge wear with several small tears and holes.
