Item Description
A fabulous
Antique French Gilt Solid Silver Tea Service Flatware Set
of completed 15 pieces in its original wooden presentation case, in excellent condition!
Offered for your consideration is a very beautiful and rare
Antique French Partial Gilt Solid Silver Tea Serving Set
of total 15 pieces in its original wooden presentation box. The set comprises of 12 Tea Spoons, Tea Strainer, Sugar Tongs and Tea Caddy Spoon, all nicely housing in deep red velvet and silk lined presentation case.
All the pieces are made of solid coin silver .800 purity. There is a good reason that this magnificent set is not sterling silver (.925 or more) but coin silver (.800) - because the higher the silver contents, harder the gold gilt to remain vivid. As you can see, after more than 170 years, the
Vermeil
(gold-washed over silver) here is still remain perfect condition.
The Tea Spoons and Sugar Tongs are partial gilt, which requires a highly skilled craftsmanship to create, finely embellished with the mixture of hand-engraving and
Guilloche
engine-turned engraving. The pointed end of the bowl is as classically French as it gets. The Tea Caddy Spoon has gorgeously shaped large bowl in Rococo style. The Tea Strainer has lovely piercing pattern with foliage accents.
Another attraction of this set is a presentation box. The interior is lined with deep red velvet and silk. Outside has rich layer of black lacquer. Elegant wood and gilt-metal marquetry on the top, a large
"Thé"
(Tea) on the centre and hand-engraved inscription on the frame, it can read:
"À Mr Eug Foucault prix de barrières qui qui état acquit aux courses de Nozay / Bavin E. Bonnemont Lejeune de Vaugeon / 20 Septembre 1846 / Charles et Jules Millien et G Foucault"
. After a brief research, we found this Mr. Eugene Foucault was indeed participated the
Courses de Nozay
as a derby jockey, riding a horse named
lady Maria
, and won the second place of the prize. According to the document we found, Mr Foucault was leading the race at most of the course, but just before the goal his horse accidentally stopped and missed the first place by half-head.
